Modeling agencies, school or business

Many aspirants visit modeling agencies in the hope of becoming superstar cover girls. While the modeling agency can be a stepping stone, very few young women actually get the opportunity to grace the runways of Milan or the pages of Vogue. This does not mean, however, that the modeling agencies have nothing to offer even the plainest young women and men. There are a variety of classes offered under the auspices of personal grooming.

Aspiring models will usually attend an open call, bringing whatever pictures they may have. The open calls may be at the agency location or at local hotels or malls. Though the agents are, of course, looking for the next Kate Moss, the main income for most small town modeling agencies is that received for classes, photo shoots and numerous other agency fees. The models sign with the agents for a fee. This fee includes classes in walking for runways, professional make-up skills for auditions and photo shoots, and depending upon the modeling agency, classes as varied as cold-reading, auditioning for commercials, movement for photo-shoots. The modeling agencies usually have a few photographers that they will use to shoot all the new talent. This fee is usually not included in the sign-up fee, nor is the fee for the required professional make-up artist, or the printing.

Making these substantial fees an applicant now has professional photos and perhaps some runway and make-up skills. They may expect or have been lead to believe that now the modeling agency will submit them for possible modeling jobs, shooting photos, modeling clothes for designers and even doing commercials. It is the rare girl who having been through all the classes and photo shoots is actually submitted. The girls who have the actual necessary requirements for these types of jobs are usually submitted instantly.

The girls or young men who truly stand out are usually sent to Paris or New York to a sister agency operating there. There are no fees required, although the model may be required to pay for their plane ticket. Upon arrival, they are given a place to live which will be repaid later from their working fees, photographers and makeup artists who will do a photo shoot of them for free, and auditions or go-sees. Models will begin working immediately, with or without experience. If they project for film, they will also be sent on commercial and even film and television auditions. No payment is done. It is expected that the agency will make money from the twenty percent taken from the work the model gets. In return the agency will use whatever influence they have to get them the best auditions.
