Pre-selection for Mr International in London

Last Sunday the internationally renowned Pineapple studios near Covent Garden, London, hosted the pre-selection for Mr International happening this year in November in Jakarta. Marion Ghibaudo and myself covered the event for Stand Out modelling agency.

We arrived there half an hour before the contestants and were heartily greeted by Deric Hartigan who allowed us to stay, take pictures and watch the competition. The first thing we admire is the venue. Indeed the Pineapple Studios offer very large dance classrooms and while waiting for the contestants, we glanced a couple of dynamic and quality lessons accompanied by a pianist. With the music coming from the dance classrooms the atmosphere was simply fantastic.

This contest was Deric’s first step in Britain. He was responsible for the Irish competition for the last three years probably, which probably accounts for the fact that he dealt with this in a very professional way. To do so, he surrounded himself with both good friends and challenging colleagues Sonia Mohlich and Stuart Mc Millian. Sonia Mohlich is a fashion stylist with a very important background in television and photo shoots. Stuart Mc Millian came back from Milan a couple of months ago, where he was a fashion designer and worked with Louise Kennedy.

All in all, we were very impressed by some of the models who seemed quite confident even though quite stressed out and the interviews went well and in a good-humored atmosphere. After the interview, they each posed for an individual shoot before posing for a group shoot. It seemed that what was most important for the jurist was for the models to be as genuine as possible and to convey a message of self-confidence : "They definitely need to come up strongly, smile and have some sort of charisma". Deric Hartigan

In the context of representing England in Jakarta, the Jury also looked for something English about these models: "I am also looking for the quintessential Englishness in these models, they need to be smart and handsome but also open, easy to be with and multi-cultural". Stuart Mc Millian.

In the end, they chose Ryan Terry for his professionalism, confidence and looks. He is thus the one to represent Britain in Jakarta for this years'edition of Mr International. He enjoyed the day apparently: "I am very happy about today, it also enabled me to catch up with the other candidates and meet new and interesting people. Moreover, traveling abroad is very exciting and a tremendous opportunity for my career". Ryan Terry.
